More Facial Recognition News

Is the FBI jealous of Facebook's DeepFace facial recognition engine?

The Verge thinks so, but here at Kairos we have a different opinion. Any facial recognition system is only as good as the quality of the images used to enroll a subject and the quality of the meta data around the enrollments.

In the case of the FBI they have very good enrollment images and meta-data (based on mug shots) but the images they are matching against are often of poor quality. They are from low resolution security cameras or captured with the person facing away from the camera. Facebook has a different issue. They have high resolution and high quality photos, many or most of which the subject is looking into the camera, but often these images are not tagged with the correct meta-data. For example, any pictures of my children automatically get tagged by Facebook with my wife's name because she has their picture and not hers as her profile photo.

Our advice, as with all news, take the headlines with a grain of salt.
